The Second Self

Acrylic on Canvas

36 x 36 inches

2025

The Second Self recalls an encounter the artist had at nineteen that she still can’t fully explain. It was a meeting with a version of herself that was both hers and beyond her: a fleeting constellation of memory, influence, sensation, and meaning that she briefly became part of and passed through.

At its center, a glossy pink brain anchors a constellation of forms that feel familiar yet resist recognition. Beautiful and grotesque, meaningful and absurd, inside and outside, organic and synthetic, The Second Self holds these contradictions without trying to resolve them. The self is paradox: the self as her, and her as only a fragment of it. The painting preserves a memory too strange and too slippery to ever be fully understood.
